A Playwright Living in Tennessee

Signal Mountain, TN

Signal Mountain, TN

Why start a blog?  After years of avoiding this question, I have finally come to the conclusion that I need one.  I'm a playwright living in small town Tennessee.  This blog is my attempt to connect with the bigger theatre/writing community in places like NYC, but also to create a community with other writers like myself who aren't in one of the theatre capitals of the world.

Are there other playwrights living outside of NYC out there? If so, I'd love to hear from you. I have been following @donnahoke for some time, who writes about and for playwrights living outside of NYC.

The main purpose of this blog is to create a sense of community.  I've heard from so many former students and friends I went to grad school with, and a theme exists -- a desire for the kind of writing community fostered at school.  I don't think this blog can replace that, but maybe it has the potential to be a meaningful connection.

Thus the name of my blog, A White Line, borrowed from Jonathan Safran Foer's novel Everything is Illuminated"I imagine a line, a white line, painted on the sand and on the ocean, from me to you.”

The main focus of this blog will be observations about my own writing process and writing life. Hopefully, some of these will be funny.  Anything and everything that's part of my writing life--what I'm working on, good/bad days of writing, odd things I've observed, personal humiliations (ample material exists)--could end up here with the goal of connecting with other writers (and theatre artists) who feel the need for a greater sense of community.

Of course, what ends up in this blog will be determined by you, too.  I welcome your comments and contributions of the like.
